A tragic collision on the R101 between Mookgophong and Mokopane in Limpopo claimed the lives of seven individuals on Sunday morning. Among the deceased were five occupants of a Renault sedan and two passengers in a South African Police Service (SAPS) Toyota Hilux bakkie.
The casualties in the SAPS vehicle included a police officer and an arrested suspect being transported. According to Limpopo provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the accident involved a head-on collision between the Renault sedan and the SAPS Toyota Hilux bakkie, which was traveling from Mookgophong to Mokopane.
While the cause of the accident remains under investigation, the driver of the SAPS vehicle, a sergeant, was hospitalized and is currently receiving medical care. Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial commissioner of SAPS in Limpopo, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured police sergeant a swift recovery.
This tragic incident comes after last month’s report of a bus accident near Tzaneen, Limpopo, where six African National Congress (ANC) supporters lost their lives while en route to Mbombela, Mpumalanga, for the ruling party’s 112th anniversary celebrations.
