Richmond upon Thames in southwest London, known for its affluence and home to landmarks like Hampton Court Palace, has been named the happiest place to live in Great Britain.
The annual Rightmove survey, polling over 26,000 people, revealed that factors contributing to happiness included “pride, belonging, and community.”
This marks the first time a London location secured the top spot in the ‘Happy at Home Index’ in the 12-year history of the survey. The borough’s lush green spaces and nature, including a 6.6-mile walking route along the River Thames, contributed to its residents’ contentment.
Housing in Richmond comes with an average asking price of nearly £1 million, almost three times the national average.
Notable figures like Mick Jagger and Brad Pitt have had homes in Richmond, adding to its allure. Winchester in Hampshire ranked second, and Monmouth in Wales secured the third position in this year’s rankings.
Tim Bannister from Rightmove emphasized the continued importance of living near green spaces, particularly during the pandemic.
London mayor Sadiq Khan expressed delight at Richmond’s victory, highlighting its unique combination of green spaces, community spirit, and local culture.
