Rahul Dravid has agreed to continue as India’s head coach after accepting the offer from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to extend his term. Although the BCCI has not specified the duration of the extension, it is confirmed to last at least until the 2024 T20 World Cup scheduled for June.
Initially appointed as head coach in November 2021 for a two-year term concluding with the 2023 ODI World Cup, Dravid’s tenure witnessed India’s ascent to the top of the Test, ODI, and T20I rankings. Despite these achievements, the team fell short in winning ICC trophies, reaching the semi-finals in the 2022 T20 World Cup and finishing as runners-up in the 2023 World Test Championship and the 2023 ODI World Cup. Notably, India’s performance in the ODI World Cup was commendable, winning all nine league games and the semi-final before facing defeat in the final against Australia.
The decision to retain Dravid stems from the BCCI’s desire for continuity in the structure he has established over the past two years. This move aims to prevent potential disruption that might occur under a new coach.
Expressing his thoughts on the contract extension, Dravid stated, “The last two years with Team India have been thoroughly memorable.” He acknowledged the support and camaraderie within the team and emphasized the resilient culture instilled in the dressing room. Dravid thanked the BCCI for their trust, endorsing his vision, and acknowledged the sacrifices and support of his family during this demanding role.
Dravid’s first assignment in his extended role is India’s tour of South Africa, featuring three T20Is and three ODIs starting from December 10, followed by two Tests in Centurion (from December 26) and Cape Town (from January 3). Subsequently, India is scheduled to play a five-Test series against England at home before the T20 World Cup in June.
Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, expressed full support for Dravid, highlighting Team India’s formidable unit across formats and commending the head coach’s vision and guidance. The BCCI has also extended the terms for India’s support staff, including Vikram Rathour (batting coach), Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach), and T Dilip (fielding coach).
