Gary Neville labels Cristian Romero ‘absolutely mad,’

Gary Neville criticized Cristian Romero, labeling him as ‘absolutely mad,’ and asserted that the Tottenham defender deserved a red card for a reckless tackle on Callum Wilson during their 4-1 victory over Newcastle on Sunday.

Romero’s challenge on the England striker in the 80th minute resulted in a yellow card, but Neville believed it warranted a more severe punishment, considering it could have been his second red card of the season and his fourth in 2023.

Describing Romero as ‘crazy’ and emphasizing his tendency to consistently tackle, Neville expressed his belief that the incident should have resulted in a red card upon initial inspection.

After reviewing the replay, Neville reiterated his stance, stating, ‘No, that’s a red. Again, I’ve got very little sympathy for him. He does it on the floor, and he’s defenseless. He’s just gone straight over the ball onto his ankle.’

Neville acknowledged Romero’s aggression as a crucial aspect of his game but urged Spurs to address and control it better. He emphasized that such incidents were not a fluke, given Romero’s track record.

The tackle occurred when Spurs were already three goals ahead, with Destiny Udogie opening the scoring and Richarlison adding two more. Post-match, Sky Sports pundit Michael Dawson labeled the foul as ‘stupid,’ emphasizing that there was no need for such a challenge in a game where Spurs were comfortably leading.

Dawson echoed Neville’s sentiments, expressing Romero’s luck in escaping a red card and emphasizing the need for better decision-making. He mentioned Romero’s recent suspensions, indicating a pattern of behavior that needs addressing.

Jamie Redknapp, also part of the Sky studio, praised Romero’s defensive skills but highlighted his tendency to make rash decisions, leading to potential red card situations.
