Beachgoers in Dana Bay were greeted with a surprising sight this morning as they spotted a king penguin waddling along Second Beach. The unexpected visitor had traveled an astonishing distance, all the way from the sub-Antarctic islands to Dana Bay, covering thousands of kilometers.
The founder of the Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre (SAPREC) located at Mossdustria, near Mossel Bay, Carol Walton, informed the Mossel Bay Advertiser that the penguin landed on a bustling beach. Taking swift action, SAPREC has provided the penguin with total isolation while awaiting the results of various tests.
Walton mentioned that within the next 24 hours, they anticipate receiving the results of tests, including those for avian flu, among others. Depending on the outcome, plans will be made to relocate the penguin to a secluded beach, where it will be closely monitored to assess its return to the ocean, hopefully to its natural habitat.
At present, the gender of the penguin remains unknown. SAPREC will conduct a blood test to confirm its sex. As the situation unfolds, SAPREC continues its efforts to ensure the welfare of this unexpected visitor.
