The initiation of LG OLED TVs’ lossless wireless Dolby Atmos marks the commencement of the latest competition in home theater technology.

LG has unveiled that its 2024 range of TVs and soundbars will feature wireless transmission of Dolby Atmos audio in lossless quality, made possible by the innovative WOWCAST technology. This advancement, showcased in models such as the LG M4, LG G4 OLED TVs (equipped with the Alpha 11 AI processor), and the LG C4 (utilizing the Alpha 9 AI processor), allows for the wireless delivery of lossless Dolby Atmos to compatible LG soundbars, specifically the LG S95TR and the new LG SG10TY.

While wireless Dolby Atmos transmission is not entirely new, LG’s approach sets itself apart. The 2023 Samsung HW-Q990C soundbar, for example, enabled Dolby Atmos wirelessly but with compression, compromising on sound quality. Dolby Atmos FlexConnect was also introduced by Dolby, featuring a wireless ecosystem for audio broadcast but in the early stages and without official product announcements.

LG’s introduction addresses concerns of traditional home theater setups with large speakers and cables, offering an immersive Atmos experience without compromising quality or dealing with unsightly wiring. This move aligns with the growing availability of Atmos content on streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney Plus, and Prime Video, catering to users seeking a complete home theater experience, especially with a lossless option for Blu-ray playback.

Looking ahead, LG’s commitment to wireless technology suggests a future trend in the industry. The LG M4 OLED, when paired with the new soundbars via WOWCAST, creates an almost entirely wireless system (except for power cables), setting a standard for quality and convenience. With competitors like Samsung exploring cable reduction with its One Connect Box and Sony venturing into wireless Dolby Atmos with its HT-A9 surround speaker package, the home theater landscape is poised for further advancements in wireless audio technology driven by healthy competition.
