Users of Facebook are being strongly advised to conduct an “immediate check” in response to a new pop-up notification.

Facebook has introduced a new feature called ‘Link History,’ creating a buzz among users. This setting, available on the Facebook app for both Android and iPhone users, tracks the links users click while using the platform on their mobile devices. The feature remembers links visited in the app’s browser over the past 30 days, excluding links from Messenger chats.

The primary purpose of ‘Link History’ is to customize advertisements by influencing the ads users see across Meta apps, including Facebook and Instagram. As ads contribute significantly to Meta’s revenue, the company aims to enhance their appeal to users.

Although the feature is not enabled by default, some users have reported encountering a pop-up requesting permission for link history. If users wish to disable this feature due to privacy concerns, they can do so by following a few steps. Users are instructed to tap any link within the Facebook app, opening Facebook’s Mobile Browser. From there, they can access Browser settings by tapping the three dots on the bottom right of the screen. Within Browser settings, users can find the link history toggle, allowing them to enable or disable the feature.

It’s important to note that turning off link history immediately clears the user’s link history, but Meta may take up to 90 days to complete the deletion process. While some users may find the idea of link tracking intrusive, others argue that tailored ads based on their interests can be beneficial by introducing them to relevant content.
